At Chesapeake, we realize that how a great product is produced is just as important as the product itself. That's why safety, public health and protection of the environment are our top priorities across our operations.

Minimizing our environmental footprint has been and will always be a Chesapeake objective. Examples of our environmental sensitivity abound. For instance, in many locations we utilize multiwell padsites to drill several wells from a single location, reducing our surface footprint by up to 90% when compared to traditional vertical drilling. We also focus on conserving water and protecting precious freshwater resources, including both ground and surface water. As a result, we have established several innovative internal programs focused on water recycling and greener hydraulic fracturing operations.

Furthermore, we use the latest horizontal and directional drilling technologies to position wells at a safe distance from homes, schools and businesses as specified in applicable laws and regulations. We have extensive programs to ensure the safety of our employees, contractors, landowners, local residents and the communities where we operate. We also work to reduce soil erosion at our sites, as well as restore, and often enhance, local vegetation after we complete our operations.

Regardless of form, location or type, all sources of energy have an associated environmental impact. Nevertheless, we strive to efficiently use resources to minimize our environmental footprint and preserve natural habitats. We also require all of our employees and contractors to commit to creating an incident-free work environment. We realize, however, that with any human endeavor, accidents can happen. We work to prevent incidents from occurring and promptly implement a process to respond and learn from incidents if they do occur.

We are proud of the integrity and quality of our environmental stewardship. Chesapeake’s Best Management Practices (BMPs) are designed and implemented to reduce or prevent pollution by utilizing the best available resources and technology.

Chesapeake believes in protecting our natural resources, caring for the environment and complying with all applicable laws and regulations. This is a fundamental part of our business philosophy and daily operations. We have approximately 300 environmental, health and safety (EHS) personnel embedded within our field operations team, as well as a robust and multi-disciplined corporate EHS professional staff to continually improve upon our internal policy and processes, assist in review and revision of our BMPs and assist in ensuring compliance with those practices in our operations.
